Did I get a lemon?

Hi, just got my JTV 69 in. I was pretty excited, it arrived this morning. I carefully unpacked, followed the instructions (charged up the battery). I started to wait for the battery to charge, but of course I wanted to check it out immediately, so I plugged in the VDI cable into my HD500 and...nothing. Hmm, I wondered if I had something set up wrong. It seemed like a simple operation, you plug it in, it makes noise. Pretty blue LED lights should be coming on. But none of that happened. So I plugged it in with a quarter inch guitar cable. Mags are working (phew). Got it tuned up, pretty decent action though it might require some tweaking.
So I unplugged the guitar cable, tried the VDI again, but nothing. Hmm. Then I plugged the VDI cable into the USB port that comes with the Variax and went into Monkey, downloaded the usb driver, downloaded workbench... but the device is not recognized. The RJ45 connector just blinks red (usb connector is a nice solid green). Hmmm...bad cable? Tried a standard RJ45 cable for testing, still blinked red. Plugged the Variax back into the HD500 with the RJ45, and sound! Nice! Except, none of the LED lights are on and changing the tuning and guitar models has no effect. Hmm. Now I am arriving at my wtf moment.
So, the battery is finally fully charged, pop it into the Variax, plug the Variax into the HD500, and have the guitar sounding, but absolutely none of the on-board electronics are working. No LED lights, no tuning changes, and no guitar models.
Am I doing something really stupid here? Any help would be greatly appreciated. I hate spending 1500 dollars on something that doesn't work. I would call Line 6, but they only have Mon - Friday support.
Thanks,
Joe
Hmm, kind of surpised nobody offered any advice. For some reason, taking the model knob completely off and putting it back on again did the trick (saw that after scouring the message boards for 2 hours). Still don't know what is up with the VDI cable, I'm pretty certain it is not working. Thanks for the uh, views of my message.
When the Variax is hooked to the USB interface you have to have a 1/4" cable plugged in as well and make sure that the volume knob is not turned to zero. That might be why the Mankey isn't seeing the Vax/
+1 to gene1714
That should be the solution! If not: the cable really seems to be bad...
Yes the 1/4 cable nees to be plugged in and the Variax need to be turned on with volume up as gene mentioned.
Then you should see green lights on both side of the USB interface box.
Make sure the battery is well charged. The VDI cable suppplies power when hooked to the HD 500 but when in USB interface relies on the battery for power.
I was updating to 1.82 last night, after about 15 minutes before completeing the, Variax shut off .
Disconnected cables and reflashed and it worked fine.
