My Dream Rig is unique, because ...

Hi guys,

 

as a DT50/212, HD500 and JTV 59 + JTV 69 user I am used to flip through farious Line6 forums. Some weeks ago I got awareness on this forum too.

 

And I do believe that there should be a forum like this for users who have at least 2 out of the 3 dream rig elements to have a platform with added value to the already existing ones.

 

To hopefully contribute to a more added value to this forum I thought it would a good idea to start a thread where dream rig user can explain and demonstrate (ideally with a lot of pratical examples like audio, video, presets, etc.) how they use their dream rig and why their dream rig is unique to them ...

 

To give this idea an initial kick I like to start with my two cents:

 

I am playing in a Cover Rock Band (old rocker and restarter). We love to celebrate our hymns we heared as young guys in the 70s and 80s. One of my favourite song is Here I go again by Whitesnake and we try the best we can. Recently we did some recordings at our rehearsal room with limited recording experience and equipment. Well the playing could always be better, but that is what we have captured so far:

Now: what is unique in this song to me playing my dream rig?

 

There a fairly different guitar sounds in that song which is quite challenging as I am the only guitar player in our band:

 

- Starting with the slightly crunchy guitar in the vocal intro I increase the distortion of the guitar sound by my HD500 expression pedal which migrates me into the distorted rhytmn part (some guitar players do this with the volume knob, with the potential problem nor being loud enough). I use the Treadplate pre amp model and the LP Standard JTV model in this song as the main amp/guitar sound.

 

- The clean guitar part is very different to the other guitar parts. For that I use a BF Double pre amp model and the Rickenbacker 12-string guitar model of the JTV. I play this different to the original version in sound and notes.

 

- The lead part switches back the Treadplate pre amp model with the LP Standard JTV model. Lead part contains, of course, some additional FX blocks.

I generally tend to boost my lead guitar by increasing the mixer between 3-5 db in a separat preset. This has to be done carefully, because one the mixer db is over 0 db several FXs potentially tend to produce distortion. I realized that on the my delay settings.

 

So in total i use 3 presets with 2 amp and 2 guitar models. And this is - for me - a good example where my dream rig comes to shine :-)

 

Any feedback AND lots of additional impressive unique dream rig examples are greatly welcome.

    Two recordings of songs we are currently integrate in our band programm and I am exercising at home before rehearsal - it is exercising and not 100% where I want to be, but at a level where the fundamentals of the songs are captured so far ... :

     

    1. La Grange/ ZZ Top Jamming; played with the Gibson les Paul Custom model for the clean tones and the Gibson Standard (Position1) for destorted Rhytmn and Lead guitar. HD500 Treadplade Full amp models for recording at home (at rehearsal and gigs I  use the pre amp models). Recording to a playback:

    2. Dust In The Wind / Kansas Jamming; played with the Martin 1967 6-string model; for Live-performance I use the FX Send block to root the signal directly to the P.A:

    What is unique to me:

     

    Same guitar (my JTV 59 in that case) for both songs with the biggest mismatch of sounds in our Cover Classic Rock programm. Before switching to my JTVs I would have played my Acoustic guitar for the second song (Godin Seagul)

      Hm ... 66 clicks in 7 days and no single feedback in any direction makes me thoughtful.

       

      If have to state that my idea to add some value to that forum and / or my audio examples are too poor to encourage someone to take over with other examples why their Dream Rig is unique / perfect for him (don't worry I will survive it ).

       

      And I like to point out that I do not want to justify or fight for my idea. I just wish that this forum captures more content which is Dream Rig specific / relevant:

       

      If I take the current posts into account, I honestly cannot see any added value compared to forums like DT25/50 or JTV. I don't say that these posts are bad - not at all. They just could be easily posted in the other forums like DT25/50 or JTV. If there is no difference to other forums - and I am very clear that this cannot be enforced - I am afraid this forum is a non starter (at least for me).

       

      What are you guys thinking? Am I the only one with such unnecessary thoughts? Any comments?

        I obviously can't speak for anyone else. 

         

        Part of me agrees with your comment questioning the value of this forum.  However, another part of me sees the "Dream Rig" concept changing somewhat with the upcoming Variax/POD updates that allow for greater interactivity between the devices.  Perhaps then this forum will take off more?

         

        For now, I'm subscribed to it because it makes me feel like an elite member of a smallish club.

          Yes, the announced firmware updates with the mentioned interactivity will generate at least with the JTV/POD devices new "applications" that could potentially feed this forum.

           

          Any how I just wonder why there are no more stories or "little secrets" out there with the existing devices which make sense to share with other Dream Rig user.

           

          May be your are right and we currently are just part of a too smallish club  to generate more Dream Rig specific topics.

           

          May be it just takes some more time ...

          Well, my dream rig might be unique, because I have the first RackVax.

          I can use that with my DT-50 but I don't yet have my HD500 yet -- it arrives Friday.  I do have an HD300 which I will be selling soon . . .  only bought it to test the L6 Link concept (which works beautifully, BTW).  Can't wait to set up the whole dream rig this weekend.  I have 6 guitars equipped with Roland GK-3 pickups now, so any of them will work with this system (2 Les Pauls, 2 PRSs, a Warrior and an Ibanez 30-fret Prestige).

           

          Wolbai, I can't listen to the sound samples here at work because of our intranet's "nanny" software, and I keep forgetting to listen to them at home.  I have performed both of those songs for over 30 years so I'm looking forward to it.

           

          Icewind, can you please tell us more about the "upcoming Variax/POD updates that allow for greater interactivity between the devices"?  Haven't heard about this . . .  if the update is to the JTV only then I'm screwed (the RackVax houses a Variax 500's mainboard and controls) but if it's to the DT-50 I'll be very interested.

           

          My next challenge is to get all this working with the GR-55 guitar synth.  I been using that very happily for about a year but I know that the Line 6 guitar, effects and amp emulations all sound better so I'd like to combine them all together.  The GR-55 adds lots of other instruments, tons of wild ambient effects not available from Line 6, and easier alternate tunings (not easier than the JTV, but much easier than the Workbench method).  I have previously used another HD500 as a MIDI controller for the GR-55 but would love to do that while also using the HD500's sounds.  If anyone has any tips in that regard, they would be much appreciated.

        Wolbai ... some of us are just coming on stream, so I'm sure you will get some particpation here.  I will probably not have a full dream rig (probably sticking with my twin Mesa's for now), but I have the JTV and HD500, so I figure I'll be watching, reading & learning.  Nice playing on your clips, "La Grange" in particular, by the way

         

        I figure my "Dream Rig" is/will be unique, because I'm integrating two Mesa 5:25's into it, as soon as my Voodoo Labs Amp Switcher panel arrives - damn those guys are SLOW!  That will allow me to control the Mesa channels (Clean/Crunch and Blues/Burn) from the HD500, via MIDI, to the amps, plus the Mesa "Contour" circuits.  That's getting closer to the Line6 concept, while keeping my Mesa's, which I love, in stereo.  If all goes well, the Voodoo Lab thing will live under my pedal board, with the HD500, all neat and stealthy.  The only visible difference wiil be the harness (snake) of 1/4" cables going to the back of the Mesa's.

         

        If anyone wants more details, I'm happy to share them.

          thanks for your well meaning words and that you like my recordings!

           

          The primarily intension of my thread was to initiate some value added to that forum, because I thought (and still think) that there is a right to exist for that forum.

           

          Now as times goes by I have seen some increased activity - and you are actually one of the drivers!

           

          So I just like to repeat my former message in a more straight forward way:

           

          "GUYS OUT THERE: SHOW THE REST OF THE WORLD WHY YOU ARE PROUD OF YOUR DREAM RIG !!! "

           

          I think there is no need that everyone who chimes in here needs to use the 3 dream rig pieces. 2 of them is already enough to build up some "magic tricks".

           

          And I think the more concrete and pratical the "magic tricks" are, the more they are speaking for itself. I personally tend to chime in with audio examples and some comments, because that is the best proof - words are good, but when it comes to music, I tend to play it :-)

           

          Being faithfully to my own words, I like to continue with a rehearsal record we did on "Jumping Jack Flash" in ONE Take (no fake).

           

          Well, this record is not to demonstrate my guitar capabilities as a lead guitar player :-) And you all know that guitar playing also means a fair amount of good rhytm work. It is another demonstration of the enormous variety this guitar rig (JTV59/69, HD500, DT/212) is giving me as a Retro Cover Rock musician.

           

          The amp I am using, is the PARK-75 with the pre amp model with nearly no additional effects. On my JTV69 I use the Telecaster model (what else ???) in standard tuning (no open G tuning). The PARK-75 is, as the Plexi Lead 100 very guitar pick dynamic, meaning you can greatly influency your tone just with a different intensity you are hitting the strings.

           

          I like this song for its anarchical wildness, so I do think the Stones were dammed good Punk Rockers in those years as well:

            Agreed on the Stones comment, dude! Just for the hell of it, I'll post our version of "Paint It Black", with me on the JTV-69 pretending to play the sitar, if I can get a decent take next practice!

             

            But I disagree on using clips alone to illustrate your rig:  what should go along with this is the patch you created for Jumping Jack Flash, La Grange, etc.  That would be really useful to everyone reading this stuff, along with your clip. The patches, as I see it, are a distillation of knowledge about the system, which will extremely beneficial to anyone climbing the learning curve, as I am.

              Hi Larry,

               

              once you have posted your "Paint it Black" recording we seriously should think about generating new STONES SUB-FORUM

               

              By the way: our singer is constantly treating me to play this song. Yes, and the JTV-sitar should sound very perfect in it.

               

              This is really a good idea from you! I know it takes a little bit of self confidence to post some audio, but it is truely enriching these type of forums, because it brings us always back to the main purpose and it has some fun as well.

               

              I take your hint regarding the presets and I will post some on Custome Tone. As I am busisness wise away from my Dream Rig, I will do this by next weekend.

              You are right: the presets are somehow a destillation of the personal experience and that could fit to some of the user out there and vice versa. I will do so!

                  oh - really cool! I like that sound! I think you and my singer in the band have finally convinced me to do this song! The sitar is sounding awesome!

                    A little EQ, basically, and I run the patch via my acoustic path -> through the send/return, just like an acoustic guitar.  I placed the patch in CUSTOMTONE - http://line6.com/customtone/profile/LarryLion/. See what I mean - the clip and the patch go together ;  I might update this patch - the version I had here on my desktop might have been out of date, but give it a try. The patch will select RESO#2, and will place a virtual capo at the third fret, so you can play this as if in D minor, although it will sound as if in F minor.  You should either connect an acoustic amp or PA to the SEND output, or disable the "Send/Return" FX atthe end of the chain.  However, I think this sounds best on the SEND output to an acoustic amp. I'll check my current version and repost, if neccessary.

                The Recording was done with the Full Amp Model of the Mesa Boogie / Dual Rectifer, directly from the HD500 into a TASCAM audiointerface. For live playing, I am only using pre amp models. The following presets are used in relation with my DT50/212.

                  Yesterday we have recorded "Dust In The Wind" in our rehearsal room. We always record the complete band in try to do it in one Take. This Take has 1-2 intonation failures, but in an acceptable bandwith I think.

                   

                  All in all I think the record captured the original mood quite well.

                   

                  As it was somewhere around midnight, we will call it our "Late Night Version".

                   

                  As we all are around 50 years, we slow down a little bit and so the tempo of the song

                   

                  But I would say this songs benefits with even more deepness from that.

                   

                  I am playing the JTV69 guitar with a Martin 6-String Acoustic Model. As the string action is lowered, mainly for E-Guitar playing, you can hear some string buzz which you normally don't hear on Acoustic guitars.

                   

                  I have replaced the standard neck with a Warmoth neck. Apart of the fantastic playing behaviour, this neck aslo eases fingerpicking, because of the broader neck.

                  Please be aware that I am using the FX Send Block to root my Acoustics to the PA-Mixer. (The E-guitar presets are running through the DT50/212.                     Thanks for the tones, especially the ZZtop!  I've uploaded a few more of mine, if you're interested, and will add a few more. Dust in the Wind would sound a lot better, IMO, if you raised the action, because the JTV tends to interpret buzzing as some kind of harmonic noise, resulting in a strange sounding acoustic. The JTV models appear to be really sensitive to string brand, guage and action, much more so than any 'conventional' guitar.

    "My Dream Rig is unique ..."  seems a never ending story to me

     

    Recently I started morphing 2 completely different sound s( you can consider them as separate presets) with my external pedal. I assigned to the MIN / MIX-position of my pedal all the relevant parameters of the amp and FX-blocks I am using in these presets.

     

    I have known that before, but I have never tried it. In my Cover Rock Band we are actually working on two songs, where an ordinary change of presets by using a FS seemed a too hard cut for me soundwise. After some testing it worked pretty well.

     

    The first example is a recording of the Little River Band song "Night Owls" we did in our rehearshal room (One Take - no fake, and so are some intonation errors). I am using the Marshall Plexi 100 for Rhythm and the Treadplate Model for Lead (both pre amp models). The DT50/212 was linked with the Direct Out to the PA-Mixer where we recorded it. For both parts (Rhythm and Lead) I assigned some amp and FX-parameters to morph fluently into a different sound (there is some unwanted string noise in the tapping part of the second solo :-(

    The second example of morphing between 2 presets (Rhythm and Lead) is a recording I did at home with my HD500, using the Treadplate Full Amp Models. The HD500 goes directly into an audio interface. I did the recording of the guitar parts to a playback of "Wicked Games" in the version of HIM (Bass, Drums, Keys). Iam jamming on this playback to practice. I did not managed the morphing with the pedal during the recording very well. But I hope you can hear what I mean:

    I think this is a real powerful feature I will spend more time to finetune it.

     

    Any hints / experiences from other users who are already working on this is greatly welcome (I know I can use the volume and tone knob of my Variax for that as well. But at least at the moment I rely on my 2 pedals for that).
