Hey fellow Dream Rig owners...

I completed my dream rig  a couple of weeks ago with the purchase of the DT25.

I am a very forward thinking person so I had no issue at all going with this setup -I had no idea how much the DT25 has added to the tone of this setup!! This amp is AMAZING and I am pretty sure I can pull off just about any tone with this rig!!

How is everyone else feeling about dropping the money for the "Dream Rig"??

Re: Hey fellow Dream Rig owners...

    +1 to what Digi wrote.

And my answer to your question about the money...Worth every penny.  I've had Les Pauls and Marshalls until Line 6 Vetta.  Those rigs cost me much more than the TOTAL Dream Rig costs for basically ONE SOUND, when with this gear, you can get literally ANY SOUND and probably more with upcoming software for the POD HD line of products.  More was on every other POD product like the X3 Pro, the Vetta, etc.  It is very likely Line 6 will go the same route but in the HiDef way to handle bass and vocals as well as guitar.

I hope it will happen and if so, can't wait to see and hear what they come up with.

    Take care,

    Neal

Yep dreamrig is awsome I hardly even pick up my prs's any more. Only thing I'd say is you need an acoustic combo to match up with the dream rig so it's complete. I picked up a marshall as50 for just over £100 and it's taken it to another level and sits nicely under my dt25 combo for a "complete" dreamrig.

Re: Hey fellow Dream Rig owners...

I completed my dream-rig of HD500, DT50 and JTV-59 in mid June 2011 and am delighted with it.  I've since added a DT25 head and 1x12 as well as a second JTV in the form of the 89 and have to say I love the portability of the DT-25 as well as the sound it makes.  I think anyone going down the route of JTV, DT-25 and HD500 or HD Pro will find their money is well spent.

I find it's perfectly possible to get an acceptably good acoustic sound using the DT-50 or DT-25, but like sidysm I usually route to an acoustic amp like the Marshall AS50 or my AER Compact 60 for the acoustic JTV models.  I'm gagging to experience the improvements that are coming in the next JTV firmware update (v1.8)

    Have fun

    Nick

I was actually shocked at how good the acoustic tone was when I added the Bassman to my existing acoustic patch so I could use it with the DT25.  Didn't think it would have the high end, but it sounded great.  Also really looking forward to the JTV update.

Hi Jason - glad you are enjoying the new addition to your Line 6 rig.

If you liked the Bassman for your acoustic sound, I suggest trying "no amp" and run the DT on Pentode, Class A/B, Topology 1.  that should sound pretty good depending on how you have channel B Gain & tones set up on your DT25.

Better yet is what I found to use is a DUAL amp patch using two PhD amps with gain at about 2-3 o'clock, and then tone to taste.  Keeping the volume high and the gain very low with the ported cab modeled with that amp seems to give very warm, yet sparkly results even without any tweeter.  Of course if you plugged your DT25 into the PA, it would ADD the additional high end since the tone is in there in either example I suggested.  In fact  - it might be too bright running through the PA.  But it's all to your liking.

I have posted a couple of my acoustic patches for the JTV guitar as well as the HD500 on Customtone.com if you're interested in check them out.

Re: Hey fellow Dream Rig owners...

Cool!  I will definitely try that as well as your patches.  It's funny, I was bummed at first because I couldn't just use a no amp setting so I just picked a clean amp.  It didn't occur to me to just use a clean setting on Channel B...DUH!

Of course I was in a hurry since I use so many different patches and had to convert them all to pre only, trying to get the right levels.  Still working on it, but it sure is worth the effort.  The HD500 sounded great through my keyboard amp, but this is just a whole different level.  I love it!

Thanks for the tips.  Still trying to figure out the optimal way to set up and level everything...how to set drive, volume on the HD500 and how to set the master volume on the DT25, stuff like that.  Every time I figure something new out I have to go back and apply it to the rest of my patches.  With a very limited time available to play at volume, it makes it a real challenge.  The fact that I have very little experience with real guitar amps adds to it.  That's one huge advantage with the Dream Rig, there are few variables with everyone using basically the same gear from guitar to preamp to amp.

Just completed my Dream Rig with the DT25 stack on Friday.  Played with it on Saturday and while I still have a lot of work to do converting and leveling my tones that were previously going into a keyboard amp, I and the rest of the band were amazed at the difference.  Now I am scouring the message boards looking for tips.

    Oh what fun!

Well worth the money to have this flexablity. I have spent more money on other gear with less ability. This is the swiss army knife of gear. I have completed my setup. I now have the DT50 212 with JTV 59 and the Pod HD 500. Everthing is amazing and works well. I converted all the Presets in the pod to pre amp models and that made the sound so much better.

Re: Hey fellow Dream Rig owners...

    Disappointed....

This is a dream rig for electric guitar sounds...but not for the Variax guitar.

The Variax has 10 acoustic sounds...one third of the guitar's sounds are pretty much useless with the "Dream Rig" amp.

Like Sidysm noted above, the DT25 is worthless for acoustic tones and you need an acoustic amp or a solid state amp with a clean sound worthy of the acoustic sounds to complete the rig.

While designing the amp, was it impossible to have a really clean sound available?

Because it doesn't exist in my DT25.

I would even take a solid state amp as one of the channels or modes...

I know that solid state and tube are different amp types, but you really need both to use this guitar to it's potential.

Or maybe a really clean tube channel, which this amp doesn't have.

This is a very good sounding amp, but I already had a good sounding tube amp, and there's lots of good sounding amps available on the market already.

I need one that does the tube electric sounds and the solid-state Variax acoustic sounds.

Sorry...no dream rig to me without the acoustic guitar sound too!

I just quoted this portion of the post immediately preceding this post I'm leaving so there cannot be any confusion about what I wrote or what I meant.

To the person who wrote this - I agree with you only on one aspect of all you have written negatively about the Dream Rig combination of gear.

      1. I agree that with all the models that the JTV guitar has  - which by the way are the same amount as all previous Variax guitars to this point - should have had a tweeter that could be turned on/off with each acoustic based patch.
      2. Also in the case of the configuration of the Dream Rig - perhaps thinking about the Acoustic models on the JTV after all this time of having acoustic models, the DT line of amps could have been designed with a dedicated solid state pre/power section that would work with the acoustic models including automatic tweeter on function.  This could be also configured by the user for flexibility from any default settings.  But enough of "coulda, woulda, shoulda" or "Monday morning Quarterbacking" as the old sayings goes.

Since these feature do not exist yet...I strongly suggest the writer of his negative post berating Line 6 and the Dream Rig for his perceived Acoustic model lack of attention in its configuration…Please simply scroll up and click the link to my acoustic model presets and patches.

I’ve done tons of modifications with the guitars in Workbench, and tons of patches that before the latest HD500 Edit version 2.02 which has one third of an entire Set List labeled Bass/Aco/Voc.  Line 6 chose a very different way to handle acoustic patch amplification. Those patches are very good in my opinion, but are really only designed for use direct from the POD HD to the PA or another amp like what the person above posted you need for the acoustic patches.

I believe this simple thing – I consider my patches posted on CustomTone at the link listed a few posts up to be very well crafted for using various acoustic models through the DT amp in its Dream Rig configuration.  What I know about how this gear works, I know that I can use just one XLR cable in the back of the DT amp and send the full range signal I want to the PA while having a very good acoustic sound on stage.  I don’t need to have a tweeter in my DT amp as it produces enough high Q that it’s certainly sounds authentically acoustic before it even come out the PA or back at me through the full range monitor I’m standing in front of or my in-ear system when I need to monitor stage that way.

I offer you the chance to check out what I’ve done and work with very successfully in my live performances for yourself and also think about how the signal passes from the DT amp if you only can send one XLR signal to your PA or, use the POD HD XLR output for that and put in “dummy” amps to mute your DT amp stage volume while in any acoustic patch so you just hear the monitors.  None of my posted patches have this dummy amp configuration, but if interested I can certainly post one there for anyone who feels the DT amps sound horrible with any acoustic guitar model through them.

This is easy stuff.  It just takes product knowledge of all the Line 6 gear and how it all works separately as well as together, and being able to give a little to gain much.

I hope all this typing helps you and anyone else who happens to read this post.

      All the best,
      Neal

Re: Hey fellow Dream Rig owners...

Thank you Neal for your thoughtful response.

Maybe there is an issue with my amp, because I am not getting "a very good acoustic sound on stage" from the DT25 without using a second amp or PA support.

Do you have a video of acoustic guitar sounds coming out of your DT25?  I would love to hear it to see if it's the same ball park as what I'm getting.

I tried your MerlinFL_POD HD500_ACOUSTIC 1 patch and there is no way that would fly at my gigs (thru the DT25.)  Is there something wrong with my amp?

I consider the DT25 acoustic guitar sounds good enough to goof with a rock band but unacceptable to use with a singer songwriter acoustic duo.

I gig on guitar and bass, and have been full time gigging for 14 years.  Most of my gigs are Duos or Trios in small places and also a houseband rock gig at a larger bar.  Most of the time at the small gigs, I'm expected to provide the guitar sound with no PA support for the guitar.  So do I take my solid state amp and have the acoustic guitar stuff sound wonderful while having the lead guitar distortion leaving a bit to be desired, or take a tube amp, giving the opposite results.  Or lug both amps.

I'm old and less is better. Less to carry, less possible equipment problems, less stuff for drunk people to fall on, etc... And I'm talking small gigs here, but they're my bread and butter and they pay the rent.  This is less of a problem on a stage with a PA.  But by the majority of gigs where I live, you don't need to mike the guitar amp.  Just think of how simple life could be just having the amp produce both acoustic and electric tones.

To have all of the tonal possibilities of the Variax to be useful and have that great tube distortion in one amp would be a blessing for me and my small gigs.  And the gigs with drummers... And the big gigs...........

I don't think having one really clean amp channel is asking tooo much.  My DT25 has distortion present and very audible in the cleanest channel at the cleanest settings.  Fine for electric sounds, but unusable for serious acoustic tones.

I mean, the whole joy of the Variax is switching from acoustic to electric sounds.

Without PA support I need two amps?

Okay okay, two amps to have the tone(s) I want...a tube distortion sound and a ultra clean acoustic sound.

Sorry...I'm sticking with my post... "no dream rig to me without the acoustic guitar sounds too!"

Please post a link to your DT25 acoustic guitar sounds videos if possible, please and thank you.

Re: Hey fellow Dream Rig owners...

Hi Scott - your request is certainly fair enough.  I will endeavor while I have some free time to record and post a video of my dream rig in my version of acoustic mode for you and anyone else to see and hear.

Just a small codicil to anything I post audio only or video.  I'm not an acoustic guitar purist as some on here are.  Just to write it now in case anyone feels my acoustic sounds are not "real enough".  Too many choices, too many options, etc. with a Dream Rig for any one person's opinion to be the "right one".  All very subjective and it's up to those who use this gear to choose which is best for their purposes.

They've written about the 1.81 acoustic models sounding like guitars in a bathroom while the previous acoustic guitar models found on 1.71 do not have this ambient quality which seems to be more preferred.  I personally agree that all guitar models should be "in your face" and with all the FX to choose from, any ambience or more "room acoustic" could be added instead of the need to work around them to get both the 1.81 full functionality with the POD HD units, or have more user friendly 1.71 acoustic guitar models while sacrificing the all the other 1.81 features.  The option to have a choice would be best, but perhaps this is not a DSP possibility, or some other computer coding resource issue I would know nothing about.

I read your post thoroughly and understand your "needs" vs. your "wants".  Using the Dream Rig might not be the best option for your needs or wants at this point in time.  I've played my POD HD500 through high end bass cabinets with variable tweeter/horn controls both my acoustic and electric sounds.  I have patches set for that situation which adjusts the high Q on my electric patches.  I've done the opposite as I wrote previously.  My full stage rig has both as I do play bass, acoustic guitar, electric guitar, and synthesizer from my Taurus pedals through my bass or my older Variax 700s that all have GK-3 Roland pickups on them into two Roland GR-55 units.  This is obviously not what you are looking for.

And since you brought up your age by saying you're old.  I'm 51 and my ever increasing head to toe very severe Arthritis makes it hard to even stand through a typical four hour show. My Arthritic condition is congenital which started attacking my body parts in my 20s and it's simply a race against the time I have left to perform that I'll not win.  Even then it put an end to my baseball pitching career.  Add to that my back, knees, and other essential body parts have been through decades of roadieing tons of gear from the old days where bigger was always better, to these recent days where you have the choice of smaller to get the sounds you want.  It is literally killing me to set up and tear down my gear and it's not likely I'll be getting a roadie to help me any time before I pass away.

          Back onto your topic...

My belief is that your will have to choose or another form of amplification if you don't wish to carry two amps.  However, you asked me to post a video to demonstrate my acoustic patches through the Dream Rig, and I will do this ASAP.

Have you checked out the Line 6 LowDown combo amps?  Perhaps, one of those models will be what you are looking for if you can go 100% solid state.  Some of those models have a physical switch for the horn which might just work well enough to give you both good electric sounds as well as good acoustic sounds from one amp?  Or maybe there are other bass amps with a similar switchable tweeter?  I've not seen any Keyboard of acoustic specific amps that have this feature or are made with tubes.  Maybe the Shenandoah line of acoustic amps made by Genz-Benz?

I'll post back here one I've created my video demo.

          Take care,
          Neal

Here is a video I had to break into two sections to post on YouTube demonstrating the acoustic sounds I can get from the DT amps with the JTV guitar and either a POD HD500 or POD HD PRO.

I hope these video clips help with the question regarding "acoustic sounds coming from just the Dream Rig".  I've given two choices.  There are many others, but I was limited to just the Dream Rig gear and that is what I did my best to demonstrate and hopefully give answers to those who were wanting them.

Dream Rig a TOTAL F'ING NIGHTMARE!

Had my first gig with this set up and after hours of reading and YouTube video watching and manual flipping knob turning and tweaking, I get to my gig, plug everything up and NOTHING WORKS! The expression pedal doesn't work, I try to change the tuning on my JTV and I get this ridiculous harmony, the tone is horrible the unwound strings sound like needles and the wound strings sound like booming farts while the whole of the tone sounds as if I am playing through a cardboard box! Very Very disappointed! I am not going to give up just yet, but I have to say, so far the dream rig stinks! It shouldn't be that difficult to dial up a decent tone of a simple outdoor gig! And as for the total fail with the HD 500, I will assume operator error. But MAN!..... One should reasonably expect that the patches you worked on at home should work the next day at the gig!
